Artist's Statement and inspiration for "Angels Watching Over New Bern"

In September 2018, Hurricane Florence hit the coast of Eastern North Carolina. It was a devastating storm causing unprecedented flooding and destruction. People are still struggling to get their lives back to normal. Yet, it could have been much worse. Initially, the hurricane was headed directly for New Bern and was projected to be a Category 4 or 5. Thankfully, it turned and weakened to a category 2 by the time it hit landfall eighty miles south. It seemed that angels truly were watching over New Bern.

After the storm, the people of New Bern pulled together with neighbor loving neighbor and reaching out to each other, In addition, thousands of people from all over the country, church groups, Christian organizations, and other groups, came to New Bern to help New Bern get past the initial destruction. They took charge in many areas and helped clear the mess left by the storm so that rebuilding could begin. Some groups are still in New Bern, continuing efforts to get our city back to normal. It felt like angels, trough caring and compassionate people, continued to watch over New Bern.

This is the inspiration for this ornament. This ornament conveys the Christmas spirit of hope and goodwill. We, the people of New Bern, also know that while we have been through a difficult season, we have not gone through it alone.
